Summer Reading Challenge is Over!

Summer Reading 2016
Summer Reading 2016

You may remember, but probably not, that I did a summer reading program this summer.  I challenged readers to read at least 5 books so they could win some prizes.  I got stickers and prizes and made forms to help people track things for the 10 weeks of the event.

I expected nobody to participate.

Imagine my surprise when 3 people I didn’t even know signed up.

Then the challenge started and I read 23 books over 10 weeks:

  1. Finding the Dream by Roberts, Nora
  2. Rebecca by Maurier, Daphne du
  3. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Kesey, Ken
  4. Gaudy Night by Sayers, Dorothy L.
  5. The Fall by del Toro, Guillermo
  6. Holding the Dream by Roberts, Nora *
  7. The Berlin Stories: The Last of Mr Norris/Goodbye to Berlin by Isherwood, Christopher
  8. Lumberjanes, Vol. 2: Friendship to the Max by Stevenson, Noelle
  9. The Martian by Weir, Andy
  10. The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu: And Their Race to Save the World’s Most Precious Manuscripts by Hammer, Joshua
  11. Chasing Vermeer by Balliett, Blue
  12. Killer Smile by Scottoline, Lisa
  13. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by Rowling, J.K.
  14. The Girl on the Train by Hawkins, Paula
  15. The Southpaw by Harris, Mark
  16. Daring to Dream by Roberts, Nora
  17. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by Rowling, J.K.
  18. A Great and Terrible Beauty by Bray, Libba
  19. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by Rowling, J.K.
  20. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by Rowling, J.K.
  21. Things Fall Apart by Achebe, Chinua
  22. The Golden Bowl by James, Henry
  23. What Was She Thinking? Notes on a Scandal by Heller, Zoë

I forgot about the challenge for a few weeks when no other responses came in.  I assumed that all three of the participants had fizzled out with summer.  I mean, it is only the first time I tried this.  I wouldn’t be upset if this was a failure.

Then yesterday, the last day of the challenge, I got an email from 2 of the participants with their reading lists!  One did get through 5 books over the summer and another got through 34 books!  THIRTY-FOUR!  I am so jealous of getting that much read.  Not that I regret the things I was doing when not reading.

So, congratulations Lisa-Marie and and Mable!  Thank you for doing this challenge with me.  Since it was just two of you, I am going to send you both prizes.  More to come though… I have to work out some details about international stuff.

I am so going to do this again next summer!  Maybe 6 people will participate…
