Today is my 40th birthday. I am taking the day off of work, getting a massage, getting a facial, and getting a pedicure. I am going out for ice cream with knitting friends later this evening. This is turning into a month long celebration.
My birthday is my favorite holiday. I don’t really care about aging as long as I can celebrate the way I want. Some past birthdays have been memorable.
A few years ago a bunch of us went to play mini-golf and get ice cream. I rode bumper boats in a skirt, which I will never do again. I will ride them in pants.
For my 30th birthday, I went home to Miami for a long weekend. Two of my oldest friends joined us for a birthday dinner for Tapas.
For my 20th birthday a bunch of my college friends went to the Melting Pot with me. I was living in Tallahassee, Florida at the time and still going to Florida State. There was a tradition to jump in the university’s fountain. I remember we spent the first part of the day at the first football game of the season. I didn’t go to game often, but that a game was on my birthday seemed important enough to go.
The Melting Pot has become a birthday tradition and something I like to do every year if I can. This year my friend Erica and I took her 4 year-old son with us this year. It was interesting to think about what had changed about the Melting Pot after 20 years.
I don’t remember many details of birthdays before that. It was always tough, as a kid, having a birthday so close to the start of the new school year and a holiday weekend. I do remember a very early birthday at Hardees, before they left Miami. I remember this local place like Chucky Cheese called Riverboat Playhouse. I remember sleepover parties. I think it was my 7th birthday when I got to see Wham for my first concert, had a sleepover, and got a Cabbage Patch Kid. I always remembered that as one birthday, but I am not sure it really was.
As an adult I actually like staggered birthday celebrations with small groups. Sometimes I just want to hang out with my friends and other times I want to go out and do something fun. It really depends on the people.
How do you like to celebrate your birthday? Tell me in the comments!
