Getting Ready for Camp NaNoWriMo

Getting Ready for Camp NaNoWriMo

We are just a few days away from April and that means it’s time for Camp NaNoWriMo.  For those who don’t know what this is, it’s a less intense program connected to National Novel Writing Month.  Instead of a firm 50,000 word goal, in April and July writers set their own goals.  This is the chance to flesh out first drafts, write short stories, do script writing, or even poetry.

Getting Ready for Camp NaNoWriMo

Last Year

I did Camp NaNoWriMo in both April and July last year.  In fact, I have for a few years.  Modern Persuasion was a product of July 2014’s Camp NaNoWriMo.  I have been developing a system.  I write my really detailed outlines in one program.  In the other two, I flesh it out into a story and do the second draft.  Then clean up happens until it’s ready to submit.

For those who were reading last year, I decided to use April to participate in a National Blog Posting Month and challenged myself to write a blog post every day.  I did that, but failed to write all of what I had set as a goal.  I got a number of good drafts of short stories for my Frozen Planet series, but I just didn’t hit my word count.

This Year: Camp NaNoWriMo April

In November last year I worked on two projects.  One was a very detailed outline of a 5 part series that I’m not ready to write.  The other was some background on what is quickly becoming my third novel: Northanger Farm.  It is something I am co-writing with Christi.  This April, while I work on a few smaller projects, we are going to focus on a detailed outline of what we want to happen in the story.  The goal is that, with this outline, we can each write our content and then share.  Neither of us is sure this will work, but we are excited to try.

What are the other small projects?  There are going to be at least 2 Modern Persuasion related short stories that will be offered as bonus material.  There will be a little work on Missing Auggie, which was going to be novel #3 until I got more excited about Northanger Farm.  It has a first draft and then I realized it needed a major overhaul.  I have been in the middle of that overhaul for about a year.  I just can’t get back into it enough to re-write the content.

Keep Updated

All through April I am going to be posting about how the writing is going.  Follow on Instagram to see pictures related to writing events, my journals, and more!  I have set a goal of 50,000 words right now, but mid-month I am going to reassess that goal and see what is reasonably going to happen.

Are you participating in Camp NaNoWriMo this April?  Tell me about your plans in the comments!
