NaNoWriMo 2017: Week 1 Progress

NaNoWriMo 2017

We are a little under a week into NaNoWriMo and so far, I have been doing much better than I expected.  Today, I’m going to talk about what has been going on with the projects this year.

NaNoWriMo 2017

So, if you have been paying attention to this blog, you know I’ve been struggling with the entire NaNoWriMo project and the impact it has on my writing.  I have been very focused on finding a better way to spend my writing time in November.  I have been trying to flesh out my process of creating a new story and working on drafts of other stories.  This may be the last year I participate in the traditional event even though I will continue to write in November.

This year I’m trying something they call Reverse NaNoWriMo.  The premise is that, instead of a steady pace of 1666 words a day all month, I start with over 3,000 words a day for the first week, decreasing the number of words each day.  It starts at like 3400 and by the end you are just writing a few hundred a day.  This helps keep my word count high at the start of the month when my momentum and planning has been strongest.  It requires I write less as Thanksgiving happens and other things demand my attention.

Project one, Woodhouse Yarn and Cafe, is the new project that I am outlining.  I’m trying to figure out what the story is as much as I am writing it.  I have been researching what its like to work in or run a yarn shop.  I did research even when I was in Miami and I will pick it back up again after this month because its going to need more.  I am finding that I want to insert all these stories I have collected while visiting these yarn shops.  I am trying to make sure this doesn’t just become a story about a woman running a yarn shop.  I still have to give some plot to this.

Project two, Missing Auggie, is the project getting its next draft.  I talked a lot about this one before and it’s one I have been excited to start again.  I had this story in the right place to move forward and I have found writing it to be easier than it was the first time around.  Even with this there is a little more research I have to do as the story evolves.

This is only week 1 though.  I will check in again toward the middle of the month to let you know what’s changed.
